If you decide to create an indoor garden, regardless of whether you simply want to add a classy decor in your living area, or you have not enough space outdoors, you are creating a healthy breathing atmosphere inside your house. For first-time gardeners, it is important to know these basic requirements on how to create and even maintain an indoor garden.
Lighting-
Different kinds of plants need a certain amount of light. So, prior to buying the kind of plants that you would like to keep indoors, make sure that you have enough natural light that comes through your house.
Check the labels of each plant in order for you to gauge where you can best put them. Sometimes, the plants that you would like to keep in your living room are really best suited in the dimly lit den.
The indoor plants that needs medium to dim lights are Boston Ferns (and many other versions of this fern), African Violets, Philodendrons, Cyclamens, and Creeping Fig.
Reminder: The darker the leaves of the plants, the less light they need.
Contrary to what some people think, too much watering can drown your garden plants, and eventually they die. Like lighting, each plant requires different amounts of water poured into them as well. You just have to research how much water they require. When you purchase the plants, buy a hydrometer as well. This tells you if the soil of your plant is being over watered or not.
Like lighting and Watering, different plants require different amount of fertilizing. Research them as well. You can buy basic indoor fertilizers at the grocery store or at the plant nursery store. This is usually available during the summer and spring seasons. If you wish to grow orchids, you need to purchase a special fertilizer exclusive for them.
Your garden plants are already beautiful, but it won’t be complete without the proper pot to house its soil. There are so many pots to choose from, various designs, shapes and sizes. The good about this is, you can get beautiful expensive-looking pots for an affordable price.
Buying a new pot or re-using an old one is not an issue, as long as you have cleaned that pot to prevent your plant from unwanted pests, or any kind of infection.
What can be an issue is the size of the pot. When a pot is too big for a plant, it may weaken the roots by extending too much to fill up and try to reach the bottom of the pot. All they need is to firmly anchor the plant. If you will transfer your plant because the old pot is too small, just make the size of the pot 2 inches in diameter bigger than the previous one.
Room Temperature-
The room temperature is crucial to the growth and living condition of your garden plants. During the winter, the air could be too dry for your plants. The only way to solve this, since we cannot control the change of temperature and weather, is to use a plant mister to simulate the natural dew and to keep your plants hydrated as well. It is the same during summer, when you have air conditioned house that produces dry air.
Reminder: To ensure that you plants breath well, carefully wipe off the dust on their leaves with a semi-wet, soft cloth.
